Rugby is a very famous sport in countries such as USA, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa. The game was originated in England in the first half of 19th century.
Rugby is the hand football where the players have to run by taking the ball in their hands and run towards the opponent side by taking the ball to the goal area. Each team has 15 players. This sport is very important to us because this sport is not famous in our country.
RUGBY WORLD CUP
This tournament is organised by Men's Rugby Union, every 4 years same as one day international cricket world cup. This tournament was first held in 1987, when it was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The number of teams participated in this tournament were 20, some of the teams were New Zealand, Australia, England, South Africa, Japan, USA.
The first ever world cup of rugby was won by New Zealand in 1987 defeating France by 29-9. The 2019 world cup was hosted by Japan and won by South Africa. Most titles are won by New Zealand and South Africa having 3-3 titles respectively. France will host the 2023 Rugby world cup.
INDIA IN THE GAME
In India, rugby is governed by India Rugby Football Union (IRFU). Rugby is a very minor sport in India but it is growing fastly. Rugby in India was first played in 1875, surprisingly not by Indians but by Europeans.
India plays Asia tournaments, national tournaments but did not play any international tournament of the game.
We have to love rugby and make it popular in India so that we will also represent our team in the international level.
